Overview

Aswan

Perched on the banks of the River Nile in Aswan, the Old Cataract first opened its doors in 1900, built by the famed travel company Thomas Cook to cater to adventurous European travelers. Rapidly expanding due to popularity, it became a focal point for world dignitaries and celebrities. Tsars, presidents, and royalty have stayed here — from Winston Churchill to Princess Diana.

Legendary British author Agatha Christie was so inspired by the setting that she wrote parts of Death on the Nile while staying here, and the 1978 film adaptation shot scenes on site too. Over the decades, the hotel underwent extensive restorations, blending Victorian grandeur with local architectural flair, making it one of Egypt’s most storied escapes.
